Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.(Goodreads)
I committed a terrible sin with this book. I had it for soooooo long in my TBR and yet, I went to see the movie before I read the book. I KNOW it's terrible! I mean, from the start, I had said "No, I'm not going to see the movie until I read the book!" but my local theaters did special prices for the "Fête du Cinéma" and I ended up in front of the screen watching the movie! I'm not entirely to blame!
I won't talk about the movie (even if it's so awesome and amazing that I went to see it TWICE) but, if you guys are interested, I can make a review about it. Just tell me in the comments if you're interested!
Anyhow, the book is AMAZING. I loved Simon. I loved the first-person writing even if it's written in present tense and that usually, I hate it. But I was so swept into the story that I didn't mind at all.
The characters are great and I loved them. Honesty, I was surprised to enjoy everything so much even if I knew what was going to happen. I loved the twists and turns and how everything goes. It's a cute and nice read, the kind you read because you know it's light and fast. I think I read it in a day or something like that.
I loved the emails between Simon and Blue. They were funny and sweet and just adorable. The way they were included in the story was well done.
The best thing about this book is how light it is. I was expecting something a bit more serious or a few shades darker but even in the darkest times for Simon, everything stayed really light and fun and quirky in perfect Simon fashion. I don't even know how Becky Albertalli managed to create such a character that could easily have fallen into the "too much" category but still is just so perfect and adorable. I want Simon as my best friend! He's like the most amazing best friend imaginable!
As for the blackmail plot, it's a bit too secondary for me. I wished it was more pushed to the front since it's what is expected from the synopsis.
But, seriously, that moment when Blue appears is just THE BEST. I loved that moment and I could read it over and over since it's such a feel good moment I don't even care!
This book is definitely one of my favorite books of the year. I just couldn't put it down! I even bought it in English AND in French. Because I wanted every version of it. I love it that much!
